Welcome to the Chair of Science Communication with a focus on linguistics!

Our research is focused on the use of language, especially in Science journalism and Science PR, especially on negotiation processes in digital communication. We use methods from qualitative social research, applied linguistics and cognitive science. On the one hand, we are interested in the fundamentals of communicative action in science communication; on the other hand, we work closely with and within professional and practical fields.

Our research topics include polarisation and common ground in relation to dividing topics, such as sex and gender (KoKoKom); communication with, through and about artificial intelligence (RHET AI); as well as risk and crisis communication concerning public health matters (DiPubHealth, MIRKKOMM). 

We also have experiences with research projects focusing on communication at (private) higher education institutions (HoKoPrO) or the reachability of hard-to-reach target groups (Wissenschaft für Alle). Together with NaWik – the National Institute for Science Communication – we explore the reception of new and digital formats of science communication, utilising our eye-tracking laboratory.

At the same time, we are science communicators ourselves: on the online platform wissenschaftskommunikation.de, on which we provide exciting insights into current research topics in science communication.

  • RHET AI Center: Center for Rhetorical Science Communication Research on Artificial Intelligence
    • In cooperation with our chair, the Center for Rhetorical Science Communication Research on Artificial Intelligence (RhetAI) has been investigating science communication on artificial intelligence from a rhetorical, linguistic and media studies perspective since 2021. We're working in and are a part of the Discourse and Narrative Unit of the RhetAI Center. (Sponsor: Volkswagen Foundation)
  • HoKoPro: University communication at non-state universities: practice and organization
    • From 2023-2026, the project compares the organization of communication practice between private universities and individual private university organizations in order to gain insights into the logics, strategies and practice of communication at non-state universities from the perspective of communication science and sociology of science. (Sponsor: BMFTR)
  • KoKoKom: Conflict and consensus as challenges in science communication
    • The KoKokom project aims to empirically examine polarised discourses using rhetoric and linguistics, analyse the disappearance of common ground as a basis for understanding using a paradigmatic example, and explore ways of promoting understanding, i.e. developing techniques and communication formats that promote a common horizon of understanding and avoid social polarisation.
